Looking After You Isn’t Selfish — It’s Part of the Picture
One of the most common things I see in exhausted parents: pouring everything into your child and nothing into yourself — then wondering why you’ve no energy left to keep it all going.
It’s completely understandable. When your child needs so much, your own needs naturally slide to the bottom of the list. But here’s the gentle truth I’ve come to believe, both as a therapist and as a mum: it’s not selfish to eat properly, rest, or ask for help.
A depleted parent simply can’t sustain the very support their child needs. When you feel a little more resourced — a bit more energy, a bit more calm — the whole family feels it.
So looking after you isn’t the thing you do after everything else is handled. It’s part of the picture. It’s part of helping your child, too.
